About this calculator

Pea Gravel Calculator is a free estimating tool for anyone buying aggregate by the cubic yard, the ton, or the bag. It exists because most gravel calculators give you a number without telling you what that number assumes — and with aggregate, the assumptions are most of the answer.

What it does

Enter an area as a rectangle, a circle, an L-shape, a total square footage or a known volume, in either imperial or metric units. The calculator returns cubic feet, cubic yards, weight in pounds and US tons, bag counts for both common bag sizes, and an optional delivered cost. A waste allowance and a wet/dry weight adjustment are exposed as controls rather than hidden in the maths.

How the numbers are produced

Volume is straightforward arithmetic. Area is multiplied by depth, then converted to cubic yards by dividing by 27. Weight is the part that varies. We use 100 lb per cubic foot — 1.35 US tons per cubic yard for dry, loose, washed pea gravel, which sits mid-range for rounded gravel in the 3/8 inch size class.

Published pea gravel densities range from roughly 1.21 to 1.42 tons per cubic yard depending on the parent stone, moisture and how settled the load is. Rather than pick a figure silently, we publish ours, explain the spread on the weight page section, and list every constant in the sources and methodology block.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell aggregate, deliver it, or take commission on it.
  • We are not affiliated with any quarry, supplier or landscaping company.
  • We do not collect your measurements — the calculator runs entirely in your browser.

Accuracy and limits

These are estimates. Aggregate density varies by quarry, moisture changes weight by up to 10 percent, and ground is never as flat as a tape measure suggests. Before ordering by the ton, ask your supplier for their own pounds-per-yard figure and use it — they know what came out of their pit. Always confirm final quantities with the person delivering them.

If a figure here is wrong, we want to know. Errors in the constants affect every calculation on the site, so corrections are treated as a priority. Please get in touch through the contact page.

Who publishes this

This site is built and maintained by Ehtisham Hussain. I am not a landscaper or a quarry operator, and I do not sell aggregate. What I do is research the figures, publish the constants behind every calculation, cite the sources they come from, and correct them when someone shows me better data.

That is the whole basis on which this site asks to be trusted. Every number it produces can be traced back to a stated assumption, and every assumption is listed in the sources and methodology section. If you find one that is wrong, the contact page goes straight to me.
